Add all the ingredients except for the jam (or fruit compote) to a medium saucepan and whisk to combine. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. The simmering will help activate the agar.
Take off the heat and pour into 4-6 lightly greased moulds (silicone moulds work well) or serving dishes (just make sure the dish can withstand the heat). Allow to cool and set on a bench for approximately 1 hour. It should set at room temperature.
Transfer to the refrigerator and chill for at least 1 more hour, or until fully set. If using moulds, invert onto serving plates.
When ready to serve, top each panna cotta with a layer of jam or drizzle over homemade fruit compote.
For an easy homemade fruit compote to pour over your panna cotta instead of jam:
Place 2 cups of fresh or frozen berries, 2 tablespoons sugar or maple syrup and the juice of 1/2 lemon into a saucepan and simmer for 10 minutes. The berries will break down and thicken as it simmers. If it becomes too dry, add a dash of water.
Allow to cool slightly before drizzling over your panna cotta.
