Apple sauce is one of those things you simply buy in a jar from the shops — until the first time you make it at home, and realise how effortless it is! Not to mention, tastier than anything at a supermarket.

You will need

Makes 1

  • 3 apples, 2 grated and 1 chopped roughly (russet apples if possible)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 100ml water
  • 50g sugar
  • Pinch salt
  • 1/2 grapefruit, zest and juice

To serve:
